THE WORLD FEDERATION OF THE DEAF

The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) was established in 1951 during the first World Congress in Rome, Italy. WFD is an international, non-governmental, central organisation comprising national associations of Deaf people. With a membership in 124 countries, WFD represents approximately 70 million Deaf people world-wide.

At present in WFD work, emphasis is placed on the following areas:

  • Improve the status of national sign languages

  • Better education for Deaf people

  • Improve access to information and services

  • Improve human rights for Deaf people in developing countries

WFD has B-category status with the United Nations (UN) and is represented in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and on the Panel of Experts on the UN Standard Rules for the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. WFD also liaises with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
