In the past, people who were disabled but loved to travel had very limited vacation choices. There were accessibility issues, inadequate facilities and lack of staff training to accommodate their special needs. However, for the past 20 years since the instituting of the ADA, major cruise lines in particular took notice and implemented sweeping changes in order to cater to those with special needs. The results have been wonderful for all those who thought that it would not be possible for them to enjoy a wonderful, relaxing cruise. Special access cabins are often available with refrigerators to store medicine, bathroom grab bars, ramped thresholds, low sinks and roll-in showers. You will want to book...

Have you ever thought of learning sign language? There are so many reasons why you should. American sign language can be taught to anyone and it is a great way to communicate with people that are deaf. American sign language, or ASL, is a very popular form of signing. It is used by over 2 million people worldwide. It is a very simple language to learn if you have the right tools. Some letters of the ASL alphabet mimic the actual letter and are super easy to remember. The letter C is signed by curving your hand into the shape of a C. What could be an easier language to learn? Of course there are some letters that look nothing like the actual letter, but with a little repetition you can pick these up...

Normally practiced via people that are not able to verbally communicate or even perceive sound, signing could be employed among hearing folks also. Acquiring knowledge in how to sign language is comparable to acquiring knowledge of a different grammar and will be incredibly satisfying. Knowing you will have to become proficient in hand motions for all words may seem overwhelming, although not anything tends to be impossible. With practice, you should learn in no time. In case you are employed in a field in which you get to interact among a myriad of hearing disabled or deaf people, then these skills will be useful. You are able to form a relationship with hearing impaired individuals more...

Hearing aids in the strictest form of the term have been around for ever. When early man shouted a greeting or a threat from a distance, the listener in all probability cupped his hands behind his ears in order to better hear what was being said to him. In general, people did not live a long time up to several hundred years ago, especially the poor and the very rich, so being hard of hearing was not the problem that it is today. People were either born deaf or went deaf through illness. People did not go deaf through being old or through industrial noise because their were no machines. The poor died of hard work and illness and the rich were assassinated. Scholars and monks were possibly the only...

When you think of a court reporting service, you think of a stenographer in the courtroom, or a deposition, quietly keying in testimony, right? While court reporters certainly work in the courtroom, it's not unusual for a court reporter to spend more time outside of court than in. In fact, many court reporting services provide services unrelated to legal proceedings. Generally speaking, court reporting services cater to the legal industry providing accurate, word-for-word transcripts of testimony, depositions, arbitrations, and other legal proceedings. These written accounts become part of the legal record. Court reporting services are also used by businesses, government, unions, and other groups...

Hearing aids are among the largest personal expenditures some people ever make. They are also one of the most life changing devices the hard-of-hearing can own. As costly as a diamond ring, yet so inconspicuous friends and relatives seldom notice they are being worn, it is often difficult to spend thousands of dollars for something as tiny and unnoticeable as a hearing aid. The hard-of-hearing are known for delaying the purchase until everyone around them insists they must wait no longer. For some the delay results from a denial of need, for others it is strictly a matter of dollars. Determine Need for Hearing AidThe first step to better hearing is getting a professional hearing evaluation. This is...

Have you ever had the experience of communicating with people with hearing and speaking disabilities? More commonly known as deaf & mute people. I would like to tell a little story about listening and communicating using the deaf community as a model. It just happened that both of my wife's parents were deaf/mute. They met at the Nebraska School for the Deaf and later married and had six children all of which can hear. My mother in law passed away before my marriage to her daughter but my father in law lived near us until his death in a car accident. Listening for a deaf mute begins by paying close attention to what is being signed. No ten second sound bites for him. Paying close attention to...

Dogs and man have formed partnerships for centuries. Probably the first animals to be domesticated, dogs have variously been used for hunting, herding, guarding and even as companions. Whilst it may be true that you cannot teach old dog new tricks, it is also true that humans will always try to find new ways to utilise man's best friend. Some of the roles dogs now perform on a daily basis include: Dogs for the blind There is no doubt that "guide" dogs have expanded the possibilities for blind people to go to many more places and enjoy happier and more fulfilled lives. Many blind and partially sighted people put total trust in their guide dogs, often taking their life in their hands - for example...

Over the course of many decades, there have been a variety of methods to deal with hearing loss and provide ways for people who have hearing problems to enjoy better hearing levels. Hearing aids have been one of the primary forms of assistive listening devices and they have undergone many changes and improvements thanks to high-tech advancements. One option to hearing aids for the profoundly deaf has been cochlear implant surgery, which has become more well-known and widely accepted in recent years. While the procedure to provide a patient with such implants was first introduced in the mid 1960s, the use of these implants did not really become widespread until the early 1990s. In fact, there was...

Barring severe or complete deafness, there are a multitude of things you can do to help your child succeed in the classroom. The reason is that fully deaf children require the help of a sign language interpreter or even their own separate learning environment. However, there are accommodations that can be made in the classroom for children who are able to use a hearing aid or make use of lip reading. The simplest step that can be taken is to assure that the child sits in the very front of the classroom. Also, the teacher should, obviously, be made aware of the child's condition. The teacher must always remember to enunciate clearly and speak loudly. For children that utilize a great deal of lip...

What are digital hearing aids? The earliest hearing aids, like standard telephones, employed analog technology. Digital hearing aids are not better than analog hearing aids simply because they are digital; the many features which digital signal processing allows manufacturers to incorporate into their hearing aids are what makes the digital hearing aids so impressive. Digital hearing aids accomplish this by transforming sounds into a series of numbers, or "digits". The computer chips inside digital hearing aids then apply math formulas to the digits and "maneuver" them into controlling sounds that digital hearing aids wearers actually experience. Using computer chip technology, the digital...

When you're young, losing your hearing isn't one of your top concerns. Young people are developing hearing problems. While hearing loss is most often attributed to heredity or aging, things like concerts and listening to music on headsets at loud settings can often be the cause of hearing loss in a younger person. The younger generation tends to turn things up louder just for the fun of it, not because they are hard of hearing. Living in a big city and being constantly exposed to excessive traffic noise—at a close distance—can also be a source of gradual hearing loss. According to a recent study performed by the Society to Aid the Hearing Impaired and published in the Times of India, roughly 74...

The small device is used to amplify noises to increase the probability of an individual who is hard of hearing in distinguishing a sound. Technology over the past decade has greatly increased both the effectiveness of hearing aids as well as greatly reduced the obtrusiveness of a hearing aid. It used to be that an individual would have to wear an "ear trumpet" or "ear horn", which was a larger and very noticeable way of aiding hearing. Now many times you won't even notice that a hearing aid is being used until you look closely as they are very compact in size...

Revenue in female owned businesses increased more than in other businesses in the same period, according to a 2004 survey by Washington DC's Centre for Women Business research. Although the story in the United States is the most promising, a smaller, slower but nonetheless similar trend is taking place in Britain. Although much is made of women's desire for a 'work life' balance, comparatively few women leave the corporate world so they can spend more time with their families. Rather, they want to take risks, work in a more flexible and possibly ethical...

Cued speech is a system of communication to supplement lip reading by the use of hand signals near the mouth. It is used by people with a learning, speech, communication and language needs. It is comprised of eight hand shapes formed at four locations around the mouth to make sounds visible, and is used to differentiate sounds that appear similar on the lips, such as 'p' and 'b'. Although the technique uses hand shapes to convey meaning, it is not a replacement to American or British sign language. It isn't a sign language; it is a manual method of showing the dialect at a phonetic level. Cued Speech was created in 1966, and has since been adapted to cueing around 60 dialects.
